**What Smart Separations is**

Smart Separations is an information and organisation tool. It helps you map what you own and what you owe, see your financial position in one place, and model what different property settlement percentages would look like in dollars.

It is designed to help you arrive at a conversation with a lawyer, mediator or financial adviser better prepared — not to replace that conversation.

**What it is not**

**It is not legal advice.** We are not a law firm, we are not your lawyer, and using this tool does not create a lawyer–client relationship. Nothing it produces is a legal opinion about your situation.

**It is not financial, tax or accounting advice.** We are not licensed to provide financial product advice. Nothing here is a recommendation about what to do with your money, your superannuation or your property.

**It is not a valuation.** The values in your worksheet are the ones you entered. We do not verify, appraise or independently value anything, including real estate, businesses, superannuation interests or personal property.

**Its figures are indicative only.** Property settlement in Australia is discretionary. A court applies the Family Law Act 1975 to the particular circumstances of the people in front of it, and different judges can reach different conclusions on similar facts. No figure produced by this tool is a prediction of what a court would order, what your former partner will agree to, or what you are entitled to. No court or other person is bound by anything the tool produces.

**Accuracy depends on you**

The output depends entirely on what you put in. Incomplete or inaccurate entries produce incomplete or inaccurate results. We build the tool with care and update it as the law changes, but we do not warrant that its content is current, complete or correct at any given moment.

**Please get your own advice**

Before you make decisions, agree to a settlement, or sign anything, get independent legal advice — and financial advice where money or superannuation is involved. If cost is a concern, Legal Aid, community legal centres and fixed-fee initial conferences are all places to start.

**Printed and exported summaries**

Any summary you print or export from Smart Separations carries this same disclaimer. Sharing a printout with your lawyer, mediator, accountant or former partner does not change what it is: a working document, not advice and not a determination.
